If you want a resident producer license, pre-licensing education (PLE) must be completed before you can sign up for an exam or submit a license application.
You must complete 20 hours of PLE for each major line of authority (LOA) you wish to obtain.
Major lines include: life, disability, property, casualty and personal lines.
The candidate bulletin can be found on the PSI Services, LLC (PSI) website (www.psiexams.com) and contains additional information. Find out about license eligibility, exam content outlines, what to bring to an exam, exam schedules and fees, testing center rules, and much more.
How do I sign up for my PLE?
PLE may be completed either by attending classes or by self-study, as long as the courses are purchased from an approved provider. A list of approved providers may be viewed below this question section.
How long are my PLE credits valid?
You have 12 months from the purchase date of your courses to complete your PLE. The PLE provider will issue a certificate of completion for each 20-hour course completed.
The certificate is used to take your exam(s) up to 12 months from the date the course was completed. The certificate must be presented at the exam-testing location when you take your licensing exam.
Are there any waivers or special notices that apply to me?
You may qualify for a waiver of your PLE if you have completed an insurance designation within the past 12 months.
- For life insurance: CEBS, ChFC, CIC, CFP, CLU, FLMI and LUTCF
- For disability insurance: RHU, CEBS, REBC and HIA
- For property or casualty insurance: AAI, ARM, CIC and CPCU
If you have a question about a waiver of your PLE requirements, email our education analyst.
Note to new Washington state residents who were licensed in their previous home state:
If your previous home-state license was in good standing before you moved, you are not required to complete PLE or pass examinations to obtain the same LOA you held if your application is received within 90 days of your former home-state license being cancelled.
What do I do once I've finished my PLE?
When you have completed the required PLE classes and your certificates of completion have been issued, you may schedule your exam with PSI (www.psiexams.com). You may also contact PSI directly at 800-733-9267.
