Each year, the OIC presents a series of videos highlighting the intersection of climate change and insurance. Over the years, this in-depth examination of the industry and climate work has included interviews with insurance industry executives, academics, mitigation work experts and climate scientists.
Insurance Commissioner Patty Kuderer kicked off the 2025 Climate Education Series by interviewing Senior Climate Policy Advisor Jay Bruns about the OIC’s history with climate work, why a state office is involved at the international level, how the NAIC developed its Climate Risk Disclosure Survey, and the agency’s work going forward.
UW’s ‘Climate Risk, Housing and Insurance’ event
The University of Washington Climate Risk Lab is a groundbreaking research and innovation center that launched a suite of open-source, AI-enabled tools to help public and private entities make better, faster, more informed decisions on climate risk.
The Climate Risk Lab hosted an event on Friday, May 16, at the Burke Museum. Climate Risk, Housing, and Insurance — A Washington State Perspective brought together policymakers and industry leadership to discuss how climate risk is impacting the insurance and housing markets and provide an opportunity for those leaders, and the school’s students and faculty, to network.
The event featured an introduction from UW professor Phillip Bruner — executive director of the lab — and a keynote speech from Insurance Commissioner Patty Kuderer, with a panel discussion hosted by Bruner and featuring OIC Senior Policy Advisor David Forte, PEMCO Insurance Company Marketing Director Trent Stoker and Russell Investments’ Head of Listed Real Estate Assets Dave Brunette.
The second installment of the OIC’s 2025 Climate Education Series covers a few highlights from the May 16 event and includes an interview with Bruner and two student organizers.
