Long-term care license and training requirements

Before you can solicit, negotiate, sell, or otherwise transact a long-term care insurance product, you must:

• Be licensed to sell insurance with the disability (health) line of authority;
• Complete an approved 8-hour initial LTC course;
• Maintain your LTC education by completing a 4-hour refresher LTC course every 24 months. 

What to do after finishing your LTC training

Retain your LTC Course Completion Certificates. Most insurance companies require producers to provide a copy when submitting new LTC applications. Set a reminder on your calendar to complete a WA LTC Refresher 4-hour course at least 6-8 weeks before it is due (every 24 months after you completed the initial LTC training).

Will credits from this training apply to my license renewal?

Yes, Washington state resident licensees can review their CE training transcripts by logging in to our portal. Remember, your User ID is the letters LIC plus your license number, so “LIC1234567”.

CE providers are allowed 10 days to report your completion of a course. If you don’t see credits on your transcript by that time, please contact the CE provider.

Does Washington accept LTC training taken in other states?

Yes, Washington adopted the NAIC’s long-term care training model so we have a reciprocal agreement with all other states.  You can learn more about the rule for out-of-state training in WAC 284-17-264. A non-resident producer may complete the Washington eight-hour LTC initial training course or the Washington four-hour LTC refresher course if their home state does not provide one.

Some states have an eight-hour LTC course that is equivalent to the NAIC long-term care training model plus an additional eight-hour Partnership course specific to their state. Washington does not require the additional eight-hour Partnership course.

Supplemental LTC requirements

In order to sell a Washington Supplemental LTC policy specifically designed to pay after WA Cares benefits are exhausted, you must also take a one-time, one-credit course.

The course is titled WA Supplemental LTC 1-credit course.
