OLYMPIA, Wash. – Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler is calling on all insurance companies in Washington state to protect the policies of federal employees who are affected by the continuing government shutdown.There are 73,000 federal workers in Washington state.
Kreidler urged all insurance companies doing business in Washington to refrain from canceling or non-renewing all types of policies for the federal workers who are furloughed or working without pay. The companies, Kreidler said, should work with their affected policyholders to allow a grace period for premium payment.
Kreidler also urged fellow insurance commissioners to seek the same protection for affected federal workers in other states.
Kreidler’s office has the power under state law to order insurance companies not to cancel or non-renew policies for lack of premium payment. However, the state’s governor must first proclaim a state of emergency.
The types of insurance include:
- Property and casualty
- Commercial property
- Accident and disability
- Health, vision and dental
- Long-term care
- Life insurance
- Surplus lines
“Thousands of federal workers will soon miss their second paycheck,” Kreidler said. “Many of them are already being forced to make choices about what bills they pay. They should not have to shoulder the burden of having their insurance coverage at risk through no fault of their own.”
