OLYMPIA, Wash. – Sergey and Vera Pugach, husband and wife, of Kent, pleaded guilty in King County Superior Court on June 25 to one charge each of an attempted fraudulent insurance claim, a gross misdemeanor. Each received a deferred sentence with six months’ probation and must pay $1,000 in court fees. If they each complete the terms of their sentencing, they will not have a misdemeanor conviction on their records.

According to the case files, Sergey Pugach reported a travel trailer stolen from the couple’s Kent property on April 5, 2013. Vera Pugach added the trailer to their insurance policy after the King County Sheriff’s Department took the stolen vehicle report from Sergey.  The insurance company denied the claim and referred the case to Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

Kreidler’s SIU investigates insurance fraud and works with the Attorney General’s Office and local prosecutors to prosecute criminal cases.  Consumers can report suspected insurance fraud on the Insurance Commissioner’s website.
