The state Legislature passed Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 5291 that created a new supplemental long-term care insurance product. It helps people pay for long-term care expenses once their benefits under the WA Cares program, the state’s public long-term care insurance program, have been exhausted.

We adopted rules to regulate these new policies and are developing materials to help educate consumers about them. There are also new requirements for agents and brokers who wish to sell these products.

What’s underway

  • We are developing a guide to help educate consumers about these new products.
  • Currently, no insurance companies have filed any supplemental long-term care policies.
