Find a health plan in your county

If your employer doesn't provide health insurance and you can't find it through an association or public plan, you may have to buy your own individual health plan.

Premiums for health plans can vary widely between companies. Finding the best deal requires some savvy shopping. Above all make sure you're comparing similar benefits when looking at plans, so you have an apples-to-apples comparison.

Important note about high-deductible health plans

Most high-deductible/catastrophic health plans are not portable. If you select another plan in the future, you may have to wait up to nine months for coverage of a pre-existing condition.

2013 deductibles

  • $1,970 or more for an individual; or
  • $3,940 or more for two or more people

When federal health care reform takes effect on Jan. 1, 2014, health insurers can no longer deny coverage to anyone due to health issues. Starting Oct. 1, 2013, you'll be able to buy health insurance through Washington's Healthplanfinder.
