Governor signed flood insurance bill

Olympia, Wash. — A bill that requires insurers to specifically tell people that their homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage and how to purchase flood insurance (SSB 5417) was signed into law by Gov. Chris Gregoire and will take effect at the end of July.

“People have lost everything in recent floods, and many have gotten a double blow when they realized they weren’t covered,” said Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler, whose office requested the legislation. “With this bill, people won’t be caught unaware in future disasters.”

“I’m very grateful for the leadership of Sen. Jean Berkey, Rep. Jay Rodne and Rep. Steve Kirby for keeping this legislation alive despite the intense focus on the budget this year,” Kreidler added.

Flood insurance is offered through the federal National Flood Insurance Program. People can learn more about the program, including whether their home is in a flood plain, at www.floodsmart.gov or by calling 1-888-379-9531.
