How to search for an agent

What is an agent?

An individual who is licensed to sell insurance for one or more specific insurance companies.


In this section:


Search by name

  1. Choose Search All agents (two year history) or Search agents with Active licenses only

  2. Enter a name (first and/or last)

  3. Select the search button

  4. Select from the search results

If the search results are too large (over 1,000) you'll be asked to narrow your search.

Sort the results by Name, WAOIC, City, State, and Status by selecting the column heading in the search result grid.

Types of insurance descriptions*

Auto/Home – Auto and Homeowners coverage sold to individuals and families. 

Boat/RV/Motorcycle – Boat, RV, and motorcycle coverage sold to individuals and families. 

Commercial – Property and casualty coverage sold to cover commercial businesses.

Health/Disability – Insurance for bodily injury, disablement or death by accident, or for disablement resulting from sickness.

Life – Life insurance covers the life of a person.  It pays out a sum of money to the policyholder (such as the person’s family) if the person dies.

Surety/Bail bonds  –  Insurance including credit, bail bonds, fidelity, contract performance guarantees, bonds, guarantee undertakings, and contracts of suretyship, and indemnification of banks, bankers, brokers, financial or moneyed corporations or associations against certain losses

Travel – Insurance to cover medical expenses and financial (such as money invested in nonrefundable pre-payments) and other losses incurred while traveling, either within one’s own country, or internationally.

Variable/Annuities – Coverage provided under variable life contracts, variable annuities, or other life insurance or annuity product that provides a return based on the income performance of an investment portfolio.

*Some agents and agencies may be authorized to sell a type of insurance but are not actively selling it.  Contact the agent or agency to if they’re selling a particular type of insurance.

Additional search options

Washington State license number (WAOIC): The state license number that our office issues to agents and companies authorizing them to sell insurance in Washington state. (Search option field requires a complete 5-digit number).

National Producer number (NPN): A nationwide ID number the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) issues to insurance agents. It’s different than the license number our office gives to agents authorized to sell insurance in Washington state.  (Search option field requires a complete 5-digit number).

Doing business as (DBA): A DBA (short for "doing business as") is a business name that’s different than the personal name or business name officially registered with the Washington Secretary of State.  Example: Fred Smith is a sole proprietor of an insurance agency. Fred wants to name his business “Mountain View Insurance” instead of “Fred Smith Insurance.” So Fred must register “Mountain View Insurance” as a DBA with our office.

Type of agent information available on the lookup

Contact information: Business address and phone number.

Licensing information: Find out if he or she is licensed to sell types of insurance in Washington state.

Company appointments: View companies an agent is authorized to sell insurance on their behalf.

Agency affiliations: View agencies agent is authorized to sell insurance on their behalf.

Agent investigations: Find out if we've investigated and agent? And if so, what was it about?

Disciplinary Orders: Find out if an agent has broken any state insurance laws in the past two years. And if so, what was it about?

What if I can't find the agent I'm looking for?

If you can't find the agent your looking for try searching by the "Doing business as (DBA)" name. An agent could be using a name that is different than the personal name officially registered.
