Understanding your homeowner's coverage

A typical homeowner policy covers your home and personal belongings from fire, theft, vandalism and other perils. But most natural disasters, such as flooding or earthquakes, aren't included.

We recommend you review your policy on a yearly basis. If you have questions, talk to your agent and ask them for help.

Coverage exclusions and limitations

Be sure to read your policy's “losses not covered” or “exclusions” section that applies to the entire policy.

Also read each section of your policy. Each includes coverages, limitations, exclusions, definitions, and conditions that apply only to that section.

Preparation makes the claims process easier

If you ever need to file a claim, follow these suggestions to make the process easier:

  • Prepare a written inventory:
Create and regularly update a written inventory of your home’s contents.
  • Make a video or photo record:
Videotape or take photos of your home's contents, and the exterior from different viewpoints and angles.
  • Identify property:
Engrave or mark larger possessions, such as electronic equipment or tools to show ownership.
  • Get appraisals:
Have someone appraise your jewelry, antiques, stamps, coins, and other valuable collectibles so you have a record of how much they're worth.
  • Store documents in a secure place:
Keep your insurance policy, home inventory, appraisals, photos and video records in a secure secondary location (such as your office or a safety deposit box) and update your records and documentation each year.
