What to consider before you buy a discount health plan

Savings

  • Can you get the same savings without the card?
  • Ask your provider if there are other ways you could get a discount on your health care services.

Check with your provider

  • Does your provider (pharmacy, doctor, or hospital) accept the discount card?
  • Be sure to check with them before you enroll in a discount plan.

How long has the plan been in business?

  • Where is the corporate office and do you know how to contact it?
  • How does it settle disputes?

Fees

  • What is the enrollment fee?
  • What is the monthly fee?
  • Are there any other costs for the program?

Understand how the discount works

  • How is the discount applied? When you enroll or at the time of service?
  • How do you know the fee will not increase or the discount will not change?
  • Is there a minimum enrollment time?
  • How do you cancel enrollment?
  • Will your personal information be disclosed to other parties?

Know your rights

  • How does it handle disputes?
  • Take the time to understand what you’re buying and if it’s the right product for you.
  • Don’t be swayed by high-pressure sales tactics.
